How to Choose Your Wedding Photographer

Your photographs are one of the few things you take away from your wedding once the day is over. After 15 years photographing weddings across Birmingham and the West Midlands, here's how I'd choose a photographer if I were in your shoes.

1. Start with the style you love

Before comparing photographers, get a feel for the two broad styles: documentary (natural, unposed, capturing the day as it unfolds) and classic (more directed, with posed portraits and family groups). Most couples want a blend of the two. 2. Look at complete galleries, not just highlights

Any photographer can show you ten beautiful images. What you really want to see is a full wedding, start to finish — getting ready, the ceremony, the speeches, the dancing. That’s how you tell whether someone can handle changing light, tricky rooms and the quiet in-between moments, not just the set-piece shots.

Ask to see a full gallery from a single wedding — it tells you far more than a highlight reel.

3. Meet before you book

You’ll spend more of your wedding day with your photographer than almost anyone else, so personality matters. A quick call or coffee tells you whether you’ll feel relaxed around them — and it’s the relaxed couples who get the most natural photographs. If you don’t click, keep looking; there’s someone right for you.

4. Ask the practical questions

Once you love the work and the person, cover the details: How many hours of coverage are included? Do they bring backup cameras and cards? Are they insured? Do they work with a second photographer for larger weddings? And how — and when — do you receive your finished images? Clear answers here are a good sign of an experienced professional.

5. Trust your gut

If you love someone’s photographs, you feel comfortable with them, and the practical details stack up, trust that. The right photographer for you is the one whose work makes you feel something — because that’s exactly what you’ll feel looking back at your own images for years to come.
